Newtimber, Sussex
Located in the South Downs National Park, it is an area characterised by it's diverse landscape (lowland and highlands), ancient woodland and chalky downland.
Newtimber may have been more populated prior to the plague of the 17th century and building of Newtimber Place. Perhaps that is why there is a C13 church
The Church (St John the Evangelist) is open daily. It has an uncomfortable past being associated with historical patronage of Jamaican Plantation owners (and associated exploitation of enslaved people).
The nearby Newtimber Place is associated as the Church's benefactor was the owner of Newtimber Place in the 18th century.
There is much information within the Church which expands on this theme
