Beyond the chancel rails rest the sacred bones of Thomas Sefton. He lived his life during the best years of James and Charles—before peace was yet shattered—witnessing a golden age. If you ask his homeland, it was Lancashire; he was educated at Brasenose College. He reached his climacteric year and died, leaving behind three sons. The eldest, practicing surgery, journeyed to the East Indies three times and died at Surat. The second fled to Africa twice, suffering the ravages of the war (alas!) and the ruin of Charles. The third, devoted to his home, died a tranquil old man and a farmer. Go, wayfarer; spare the ashes of the pious. He lived without harming anyone; may he rest in peace. He died March 30, 1631.
