Racton
Racton Monument
Racton in Sussex, is a small Hamlet with a Church and a Monument. It once had a Manor House, but that is long gone.
The Monument was built as an entertaining venue (or maybe to see the ships at sea) during the mid 18th Century. It is now quite ruinous but more accessible than nearby similar structures (like the Vandalian Tower).
Racton Monument was commissioned by the second Earl of Halifax and the architect was Theodosius Keene who was fairly well known in the South of England.

Racton Church is based on a 12th Century Nave with a 13th Century Chancel. There were alterations in the 14th, 15th, and 17th Centuries and some 19th Century sympathetic restorations. There is no tower (it has a belfry) and no aisles.
Internally, there are three monuments to the Gunter Family, one of whom was a friend of King Charles II. A document detailing how he assisted Charles to escape to France is contained in the British Library.
